Emergency crews responded to an injury accident in central Emporia Monday.

According to scanner traffic, at about 1:20 p.m. Monday, there was an injury accident at the intersection of 12th Avenue and Grand Street. Dispatchers indicated two patients, both male.

The wreck involved one vehicle — a white SUV — that lost control on 12th Avenue and collided with the metal guard rail around a natural gas meter about a half-block west of the Grand Street intersection. The Emporia Fire Department, Emporia Police Department, Kansas Gas Service and Westar Energy responded to the scene.

The vehicle dislodged the railing and pushed it up against a utility pole. The wreck did cause a gas leak, which Kansas Gas crew members were able to shut off within 20 minutes of the incident. The SUV overturned on its driver’s side. Scanner traffic indicated two male patients, both of whom were awake, breathing and alert.

“Upon arrival the occupants of the car and a bystander who assisted the victims were being treated by EFD ambulance crews,” Emporia Fire Department Battalion Chief Rich Gould said. “EFD fire crews and EPD officers were evacuating one block around the gas leak. Once the gas leak was stopped by EFD crews, the evacuees were allowed back into their homes.”

Gould added the occupants of the vehicle and a bystander were transported to Newman Regional Health for further treatment.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

The severity of their injuries or their or the names of those involved has not been released.
