No injuries were reported in an East Topeka house fire Friday night, Topeka fire officials said.

Fire crews responded about 5:45 p.m. to the report of a structure fire at 3617 S.E. 8th Terrace, which is just east of the Topeka Correctional Facility near S.E. 6th and Rice Road.

Topeka Fire Department shift commander Todd Williams said at the scene that crews arriving there found the back of the house engulfed in flames. A boat and porch in the backyard also had caught fire, and the blaze had begun to extend into the house, he said.

Firefighters began attacking the flames at the back of the house but encountered a downed power line that was arcing, Williams said. Secondary crews entered the house and began fighting the fire there.

Williams said the house’s interior mainly sustained heat and smoke damage, but its rear exterior suffered extensive damage. No damage estimate was immediately available.

The fire was believed to have started on the back porch, Williams said. A neighbor told a reporter that a fire pit had blazed out of control, catching the back of the house on fire, but Williams said he couldn’t confirm whether that was the case.

A fire investigator was at the scene to determine the fire’s cause.
