At the meeting of the Jefferson County commissioners, Emergency Management Director Keith Jeffers reported that Hamm’s of Perry would be burning off methane gases that evening at the landfill jointly operated by Jefferson County and Douglas County. The gases the company intended to burn off can’t be used as a possible source of fuel, he said.

In recent months the City of Lawrence and Hamm’s have entered into an agreement whereby some of the methane gas naturally present within the landfill will be processed and then made available to the city as a fuel source by way of a pipeline.

Jeffers also reported that personnel with the Sarcoxie Township Fire Department have requested that they receive training on how to respond to a methane gas fire at the landfill should one ever break out there. He told the commissioners that he would be putting these individuals in touch with someone at Hamm’s so the necessary arrangements can be made.

Wayne Ledbetter, Jefferson County Commissioner, expressed the opinion that such training should be made available to all of the fire departments in the county.

According to the Emergency Management director, each year in the U.S., more than 8,400 landfill fires are reported.
