A fire in southwest Topeka blew the windows out of a family’s apartment but didn’t cause any injuries.

The fire was reported at 4:01 p.m. at 2819 S.W. 31st Court at the La Casa Grande Apartments.

Topeka Fire Department battalion chief Mark Brannock said a family of four lived in the apartment but only one person was inside at the time of the fire. That person escaped safely.

Just one room of the one-apartment unit was burned, but smoke spread to several others. The entire structure at the address was evacuated. Firefighters ventilated the apartment and the Red Cross assisted residents.

Brannock said the fire department lucked out in at least one regard. A firetruck was at Dillon’s grocery store just north of the apartments at the time of the fire and was able to respond swiftly.

“They knocked the fire down quite quickly,” he said.

Outside the apartment complex, neighbors stood around in the cold as firefighters ventilated the apartments, hugging each other and calling neighbors to ensure they were safe. Several spoke of their alarm at first seeing the fire blow out back windows and their relief in learning no one was still inside.
