A house at the corner of Plum Street and Sherman Avenue was damaged by fire Saturday afternoon in Hutchinson.

Firefighters were called to a structure fire at 502 E. Sherman Ave. about 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Witnesses told firefighters that the fire started on the front porch, which was heavily damaged, Interim Fire Chief Doug Hanen said.

That area of fire was quickly extinguished, but thick brown smoke continued to spill out of a window at the west end of the attic. Firefighters used the ladder on Truck 3 to reach the roof and cut a hole so they could fight the fire in the attic.

Battalion Chief William Lang wrote in a news release that the fire appeared to be caused by a discarded cigarette.

The fire briefly spread to a neighboring structure, he wrote.

Dozens of people gathered in the area, watching firefighters extinguish the fire. Adults could be seen comforting a young girl who was in tears.

Hanen said residents were home at the time of the fire, but nobody was injured. Damage to the home was estimated at $60,000, Lang wrote.

According to Reno County records, the house was built in 1902. The county appraised it at $89,260 in 2016, and it is owned by Sri Vallabh Krupa LLC.
