A large fire destroyed a home early Wednesday just southeast of Lake Sherwood, and sent one man to a local hospital.

The structure fire was reported shortly before 6 a.m. at 4320 S.W. Marlboro just southwest of Topeka, and the house was fully engulfed when emergency personnel arrived on scene.

The one injured adult male was transported to a local hospital via an American Medical Response ambulance with injuries resulting from the fire, Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Todd Stallbaumer said.

Flames, which looked like a ball of fire, were visible from at least a half-mile away.

Smoke poured into the air into the north and east.

One neighbor said she was awakened to a “loud pop.”

Mission Township Fire Department responded and received mutual aid from Topeka Fire Department

The fire was under control within an hour, and it didn’t spread to another structure.

As the house continued to burn the fireplace was the only thing left standing.

The Shawnee County Appraiser’s Office website listed the home as having a 2017 value of $249,370. The website listed Grady M. Golden as the owner of the house since 1995.
