Three people, including two children, were able to evacuate a mobile home before Topeka fire crews arrived Monday afternoon.

The incident was reported at 2:14 p.m. in the 700 block of N.W. Starlight Circle. A sign at the entrance to the area indicated it was in the Evening Star mobile home park.

One adult, two children, a cat and a dog were able to get out of the structure before the fire department arrived on the scene, Topeka fire marshal Mike Martin said.

The fire was on the exterior of the mobile home and caused significant damage amounting to $2,000 in structural loss. The blaze didn’t spread to the interior, though it caused heavy smoke damage, he said.

The American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the occupants. The fire is being classified as undetermined, but no foul play is suspected at this time, Martin said.
