So far this month it seems to be a daily routine for firefighters in the city and Ford County.

On Friday a grass fire covered close to 200 acres on Highway 50 near Nature’s Corner and Konda Glass.

A grass fire that was still being worked on into Saturday.

“We had units out there through the day and into the night on Saturday,” Ford County Fire Chief Robert Boyd said on Monday. “The cause of the fire is still under investigation but it did jump the road and caused a garage and metal shed damage.

“The shed only had smoke damage but the garage was a total loss.

“The units were privately owned and I am not exactly sure who the owners were.”

Another fire was reported near a residence on Highway 50 near the Boot Hill Casino and Resort.

“That fire was less than an acre and were railroad ties that were stacked up by the owner that caused little damage,” Boyd said.

Despite the uptick in grass fires in the area, the fire chief did say that a burn ban would be put into effect but does see it happening soon.

“Right now we’re giving residents the benefit of the doubt to clean up some of the debris from the ice storm still,” Boyd said. “All but one of the last few fires were caused by mechanical malfunction as opposed to a control burn that got out of hand.

“But with the lack of moisture coming and the high winds, I see us installing the burn ban by the end of the month.”
