Retired firefighter’s home destroyed in northcentral Kansas fire

KSN – March 7, 2017

Emergency crews have been working since Monday night fighting fires and monitoring hotspots in Ellsworth County. But Monday night’s fire was no match for a house in Minooka Park located south of Wilson Lake.

Andy Phelps knows the dangers all too well and is now a victim to the flames. A retired Dorrance firefighter, Phelps’s mobile home was in the middle of the fires path. He wasn’t home when the fire came through, but he hoped fire crews could save his dogs.

“They saved one, but not the other.”

Phelps’ home also burned to the ground. He’s now left with almost nothing. He still has his old firefighter jacket.

Phelps says friends and family have been reaching out to him all day, which has made the day easier.
