Hiawatha volunteer firefighter Cory Lay was presented with a certificate of recognition for exemplary service in the line of duty Monday night at Hiawatha’s City Commission meeting.

Hiawatha Fire Chief Gary Shear said Lay responded to an apartment building fire at Pemberton Village, 1400 North First St., on Jan. 28 and assisted residents in their escape from the burning structure.

“Cory did what all volunteer firefighters are trained to do,” said Shear. “He responded to a call from his fellow citizens, and at his own peril, helped to evacuate the group from a very dangerous situation.”
