The Columbus crews left Cherokee County early Wednesday morning; that included Columbus Fire Chief Jason Allison. Allison says the crew arrived in Reno County around 8:30 Wednesday morning to assist in relief efforts battling wild fires in Western Kansas.

He tells us they saw agencies from across Kansas, and even a few from Colorado. Allison says along with repaying help they’ve received in the past, this was a learning experience for his crew.

“It’s just like any big event,” Allison explained. “Even within our county or not, we try to bring something back to maybe make it better for us if were in that position.”

Along with the four fire fighters from Columbus, two fire fighters from both Baxter Springs and Galena also made the trip to Western Kansas Wednesday.

Allison says with the fires becoming more under control, relief crews are gradually being sent home.
