A fire Sunday night caused extensive damage to a rural home in northern Cowley County. Fire officials say lightning may be to blame for the blaze. No injuries were reported.

Around 10 p.m., fire crews were sent to 5081 2nd Rd., near Udall. The call initially went to Butler County 911 because a cell phone was used to make the report.

Douglass fire responded first, but the call was then transferred to Cowley County dispatch who sent Udall and Winfield crews. Firefighters were on scene until at least 3 a.m.

The fire burned mostly in the roof and attic area, according to Mitch Kratochvil, with Cowley County Rural Fire Dist. 4.

A woman living at the home had left to run an errand. She returned home to find the power off and the residence filling with smoke. Flames were visible on the roof shortly thereafter.

A false ceiling in the residence created a void for the fire to quickly spread and that caused an issue for firefighters trying to gain access to the blaze, Kratochvil said. Due to distance from a water source, all water had to be transported to the scene by tanker trucks.

County land records indicate the property is owned by Joseph and Generva Medlin. The home is considered a total loss in excess of $60,000.

Udall had assistance from Winfield, Mulvane and Atlanta fire crews.
