Blaze damages apartment building

Ottawa Herald – April 7, 2017

No one was hurt in a fire that displaced 20 people early Friday morning at an apartment building in Ottawa.

Firefighters responded at 12:46 a.m. to a blaze at 1 W. Canterbury Court, Apt. C, and found a fire on the rear deck of the apartment that extended up into the attic, according to an Ottawa Fire Department report.

“Fire crews arrived on the scene and fought moderate fire and smoke coming from the deck of building 1,” Tim Matthias, Ottawa Fire Chief, said in the report. “(Firefighters) extinguished the bulk of the fire and then opened up the ceiling in the upper two apartments to check for extension. The fire had extended into the attic and was extinguished.”

A subsequent investigation found the cause of the fire was due to improperly disposed smoking material, according to the fire department report.

Damage estimates were $20,000 to the building and $5,000 to contents, the report said.

Matthias said no injuries occurred, but the fire displaced nine adults and 11 children, who were assisted by the Red Cross.
