NOTICE OF VACANCY – Fire Prevention Inspector/Enforcement – Requisition #186490

The Office of the State Fire Marshal has an opening for an Unclassified Fire Prevention Inspector/Enforcement. This is advanced technical fire prevention work within the Topeka Office. The inspector conducts fire and life safety inspections of facilities under the jurisdiction of the Kansas Fire Prevention Code and Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services. Inspection work is governed by division directives which address inspections, inspection protocol, interpretative guidelines, local agency liaison and limits of authority. Special inspections are periodically conducted to support ongoing enforcement activities or investigate complaints. Inspections entail climbing in and out of attics, crawling in small areas, climbing stairs, extensive walking, communicating, independent thinking, using a computer, etc. Extensive travel, including overnight is required of this position.

Salary: $19.16 per hour. Unclassified (At-Will), Full-time, Benefits-Eligible.

Minimum Requirements: Two years’ experience in performing inspections and obtain Kansas certification as a Fire Inspector I through NFPA and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services certification within twelve months of hire date. College courses in fire science may be substituted for the require experience at the rate of two semester hours for one month of experience. In order to substitute education for experience, a college transcript must be submitted at time of application and before vacancy closes. Must have a current valid driver’s license.

Preferred Skills: Must have knowledge of the Kansas Fire Prevention Code, the 2012 National Fire Life Safety Code, 2012 International Building Code and 2012 International Fire Code. Must have extensive field experience as well as code and mechanical aptitude background. Must have exceptional skills in oral and written communication; must have strong computer skills.

This position is located in the Topeka office. Residency within Topeka or the surrounding area is required.

Performance Standards: To be successful, candidate is expected to routinely perform the position tasks with limited supervision by the end of the probationary period.
