Herington firefighters kept busy with grass fires

The Herington Fire Department has responded to three grass fires in recent days.

The most recent call was an early morning run Monday to the area of K-4 Highway and Union Road, one and one-half miles northwest of Herington.

Fire Chief Ken Staatz said a small area had been left burning following a larger controlled burn the previous day.

Eight firefighters responded with four brush trucks shortly before 12:30 a.m. and were at the scene for less than 10 minutes.

On Sunday, a fire of unknown origin burned an estimated one acre of grass in the vicinity of U.S. 77 and 1000 Avenue, approximately five miles north of Herington.

Staatz said eight firefighters responded with four brush trucks shortly after 4:20 p.m. They remained at the scene for slightly less than 10 minutes.

Last Monday, an estimated four acres of grass burned in a fire of undetermined origin in the vicinity of Trail Road and 400 Avenue, approximately two miles southwest of Herington.

Eight firefighters responded with four brush trucks shortly before 7 p.m. They were at the scene for nearly 20 minutes.
