Three members of Atchison County Rural Fire District No. 2 traveled west to help fight the recent grass fire that was gobbling up the area. They were Kirk Kloepper, Jeremy Lanter and Wes Lanter and they took with them two trucks, a grass truck that was purchased with FEMA funds and a water truck that would hold 3,000 gallons of water.

They left March 6 and traveled to Reno County. On March 7, they fought the fire from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. They were assigned to Division A, which is west from Highway 61 to Highway 56 near Lorraine. They were only allowed to work 12 hour shifts. Fortunately, the winds died down and the night crew was able to get the fire under control so the Effingham crew could return home on March 8.

Kirk said, “I have fought many grass fires, but nothing like this one and I will never forget this experience.” He said it was a total devastation. Houses, fences and barns along with livestock were eaten up by the raging fire.

This was Jeremy’s first time to experience a fire like this, but Wes had gone to Medicine Lodge the previous year.
