Authorities say a fire that sent clouds of thick, black smoke rolling from a Jackson Co. auto salvage yard started with sparks from a worker’s torch.

Multiple agencies helped battled the blaze at Payless Auto Salvage, 20849 F Rd.

Sheriff Tim Morse says the fire was reported just after 4 p.m. Tuesday. A photo from Jackson Co. EMS showed the dense cloud soaring into the air. Jackson Co. Fire officials requested people avoid the area as multiple emergency vehicles worked around the scene.

Morse says the fire was under control around 7 p.m. He said approximately 100 to 115 vehicles burned. He said investigators believe the fire was sparked as workers used a torch to cut the rear end of a vehicle.

Damage is estimated at $30,000. No one was injured.

Morse said crews from Soldier, Holton, Delia, Prairie Band Potawatomi Tribe, Mayetta, Hoyt, Netawaka, Havensville and Onaga all assisted.
