Lightning strike may have caused fatal fire

Parsons Sun – May 22, 2017

A rural Bartlett woman died early Saturday in a house fire apparently started by a lightning strike.

First responders were called at 1:16 a.m. Saturday to 1550 2000 Road, which is southwest of Bartlett.

Marilyn Eck, 84, was home alone at the time and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Sheriff Darren Eichinger. An autopsy will determine the cause of death.

The Hackberry Township Fire Department responded, as did the Labette Health Ambulance Service. The Kansas Fire Marshal’s Office also investigated and determined that a lightning strike may have started the fire, Eichinger said.

The fire destroyed the home.
