The Osawatomie Volunteer Fire Department is one step closer to updating its old equipment after receiving a $1,000 grant from Paola Walmart as part of the retailer’s community grant program.

According to a press release on April 12, city officials learned the department was being selected as a grant recipient earlier in the week. The funds will be used to purchase a fire hose and nozzle for the fire department.

“This is the second year we have applied and been awarded the Walmart grants,” Osawatomie Fire Chief Brian Love said in the press release. “Last year, we received $1,500 from three different Walmart grant applications, and the money is being allocated for public relations. The fire hose and nozzle that we will receive from this grant will replace worn equipment on the city’s lead fire truck. We appreciate Walmart and their willingness to help support our operations.”

The Osawatomie Volunteer Fire Department has been providing fire and rescue services to the residents of Osawatomie and Miami County Rural Fire District No. 1 since 1896, according to the press release. Volunteers are ready to respond 24 hours a day, every day, to assist those in need.

According to the press release, the department services approximately 100 square miles of territory, answering medical and fire calls as well as other incidents within the city limits and in rural areas surrounding Osawatomie.
