Three teenagers were rescued from the Arkansas River on Saturday afternoon just north of the Woodie Seat Freeway in South Hutchinson.

Hutchinson Fire Department Chief Steve Beer said the call came about 3:25 p.m. after the group went missing. Beer said the three male teenagers, described as “poor swimmers,” left about one hour earlier on inflatables near the Fun Valley Sports Complex.

The group lost their inflatables and clung to a fallen tree in the Arkansas River while waiting for rescuers on a boat. The department used a rescue boat, portable raft and set up rescue ropes downstream as a safety net.

Afterward, the teens refused treatment from Reno County EMS, said Beer, who also offered a warning.

“No matter how good a swimmer you are, you never know what will happen when you’re swimming, rafting or boating,” he said in a news release. “Wear your life jacket at all times.”

South Hutchinson Fire Department and the Reno County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the rescue.
