A combine is heavily damaged by fire just east of Salina Sunday evening.

According to the Saline County Sheriff’s Office, 38-year-old Elora Heuiett of Longford, Kansas was operating a 1991 John Deer combine while harvesting wheat in the 3000 block of E. Stimmel Road when she smelled smoke in the cab.

She told deputies she tried to coax the machine out of the field but did not make it.

Crews from Rural Fire District #5 arrived on the scene at about 8:10pm to douse the fire and save the field.

The combine’s value is estimated at $30,000. No one was injured.
