Arson force agreement approved

Derby Informer – June 21, 2017

The council approved a request for the Derby Fire and Rescue Department to be part of the South Central Kansas Arson Strike Force Team.

The department enjoys a good relationship with surrounding departments, often assisting in fire cause investigations and asking for assistance in fire cause investigations in Derby, said Fire Chief Brad Smith.

In south central Kansas, an organized Arson Strike Force group has been formed with a current membership from 17 government organizations, including state and federal investigators.

Smith said it makes sense for Derby to be a member of the group.

“In large-scale events or multiple fire deaths that could exceed our city’s capabilities, this would provide resources to assist with an investigation,” he reported.

There is no cost for membership and members provide their own personal protective equipment and transportation.

“Mutual assistance among government entities provides maximum use of resources,” he said.
