Fireworks causes $1K in damages to vehicle

Manhattan Mercury – July 5, 2017

Manhattan Fire Department officials said fireworks caused a vehicle fire that led to $1,000 in damage.

The department received a call at 3:13 a.m. Wednesday at 59 Emery Place.

Deputy fire chief Ryan Almes said the fire inside the 2012 Jeep Compass belonging to Jacky Martinson had been extinguished before firefighters arrived.

He said officials found fireworks debris inside the Jeep and burns on the passenger seat.

Almes said the fire department believes it was intentional. The Riley County Police Department is investigating the case as an arson.

“They’re still investigating, but if someone intentionally lit a firework inside a vehicle, it could be considered an arson case,” he said.

In total, Almes said the fire department responded to eight fireworks-related incidents from Saturday through Wednesday morning.

He said three brush/vegetation fires and four dumpster fires caused a combined $900 in damage.
