Firefighters search for stranded boat

Leavenworth Times – July 6, 2017

Local firefighters searched Sunday night for people who had become stranded in a boat on the Missouri River, a fire department official said.

Local firefighters searched Sunday night for people who had become stranded in a boat on the Missouri River, a fire department official said.

The people who were stranded eventually were able to get their boat’s motor started and reach safety, according to Rick Huhn, chief of Leavenworth County Fire District No. 1.

Members of Fire District No. 1 received the call for the water rescue around 9:45 p.m. Sunday.

Two adults and one child had become stranded after their boat started to have mechanical problems.

Firefighters launched a boat at the boat ramp in Leavenworth and headed south on the Missouri River.

“We found them south of (the Lansing Correctional Facility),” Huhn said.

The people in the stranded boat had been able to restart the motor right before the firefighters arrived.

Huhn said the firefighters followed as the people in the other boat made their way to the Leavenworth boat ramp.

“They were under their own power,” Huhn said. “They nursed it along.”
