4 people killed in fiery crash on I-70 near Bonner Springs

Four people were killed in a fiery crash on Interstate 70 near Bonner Springs, Kansas on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident involved two 18-wheelers and two cars near Interstate 70 near 174th Street, near the turnpike. This portion of the highway was closed.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the fire and the crash.

Update:

Five people were killed Tuesday in a six-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 70, near the Bonner Springs exit and the Kansas Turnpike Authority’s toll plaza.

A semi-truck struck a car and an SUV and then struck another semi, KTA spokeswoman Rachel Bell said. Two people in the car and two people in the SUV were killed. Both semis were engulfed in fire. While crews were cleaning up the crash site, they discovered two additional vehicles and a fifth fatality. Bell said that it wasn’t until the fire was out, that emergency crews were able to see the two other vehicles.

One of the semi drivers was transported to an area hospital with unknown injuries.

The incident was reported shortly after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
