Topeka Fire Department crews battled not only a garage fire but temperatures in the lower-90s on Tuesday afternoon as they dealt with a garage fire on the city’s north side.

The crews made quick work of the blaze and no injuries were reported to fire crews or those who lived at the address where the fire occurred.

The fire was reported at 1:09 p.m. in the west alley of the 1200 block of N.E. Madison.

Topeka Fire Department Shift Commander Todd Williams said at the scene that first companies on the scene reported “heavy smoke” coming from the roof vents of the two-story garage.

Crews didn’t find any flames until they went upstairs in the garage. There, they found a fire in the north portion of the upstairs garage area.

Williams said firefighters made a “pretty quick knockdown,” and reported the fire was under control as of 1:45 p.m.

Williams said people who were at the address on N.E. Madison got a car and two motorcycles out of the garage before firefighters arrived.

Five fire engines and trucks were on the scene as crews worked to put out the blaze.

Topeka fire investigators had arrived on the scene to attempt to find the cause of the fire.

Additional details, including an estimated dollar loss, weren’t immediately available.
