Semi fire shuts down I-435 near Quivira

KCTV 5 – July 11, 2017

Emergency crews had to shut down a major highway early Tuesday morning after a semi-truck burst into flames.

The truck burst into flames about 2:45 a.m. while heading west on Interstate 435 near Quivira Road.

Overland Park police say the driver lost control, hit a barrier and the truck exploded.

Two people were inside the truck. Both were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Police have closed I-435 in the area while crews worked to battle the flames and get the truck off the road. They expect the process to keep the interstate closed for several hours.

Those driving in the area will be diverted onto US 69 Highway and from there can get back onto I-435.

The fire was put out about 4 a.m.

Crews are using a crane to move the semi.

The semi was carrying dry food goods.
