A fire at a Wichita fourplex has left about a dozen people without a home this afternoon.

Wichita firefighters were called to the 9000 block of west Westlawn Street just after noon Sunday.

When crews arrived they found fire coming from the first and second story of one of the units. They were originally told by neighbors that someone was trapped inside, but after a thorough search they found that the three residents weren’t home at the time.

The three other units in the building were also damaged by smoke.

“We are looking at displacing them right now because we’ll have to shut the utilities off in the building so we’re working with Red Cross to try and find them a place, at least for tonight,” said Wichita Fire Department Battalion Chief John Turner.

Turner said one firefighter had to be transported to a local hospital due to a heat-related illness.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Early estimates show there was about $100,000 worth of damage.
