Fire burns at dump site

Leavenworth Times – July 18, 2017

Firefighters responded to a fire over the weekend at a personal trash dump site, a fire chief said.

The fire was reported around 9:30 p.m. Saturday on New Lawrence Drive south of Eisenhower Road. Members of Leavenworth County Fire District No. 1 responded to the fire.

Chief Rick Huhn said the fire was burning in an area that had been used to dump garbage including old tires.

He the fire was about a mile from the roadway, but a red glow and smoke could be seen from New Lawrence Drive as well as from Eisenhower and Tonganoxie roads.

Huhn said firefighters used pickup trucks with four-wheel drive to access the fire scene. He said the fire was still burning on Sunday.
