Fire damages north Wichita bakery

KAKE – August 7, 2017

Fire damaged a north Wichita bakery Sunday night. No one was injured.

Interim Fire Chief Tammy Snow said the fire developed inside La Espiga (The Pin) at 21st and Hood shortly after 10:00 p.m. People passing by hurried to a nearby fire station and told the crew what was happening. Crews then discovered fire “in the far back corner, in the kitchen area,” Snow said. The exact cause is not known.

Snow added people had left the bakery around 8:30 p.m. Crews were able to limit the fire to the kitchen area, but smoke spread throughout the building. A section of West 21st Street was blocked as a precaution.

Early reports indicated a strip mall was damaged by the fire, but Snow said this was not the case. A strip mall close to the bakery was not harmed.
