Hutchinson Fire Department will have a school supply drive this weekend to help students at Avenue A and Lincoln elementary schools.

Lincoln Elementary School Principal Darla Fisher said there are always students who don’t have all the supplies they need for school, and teachers often provide those supplies out of their own pockets. Teachers won’t tell her how much it adds up to, because they see their students as their own kids in a way.

Fisher said back-to-school shopping can be tough financially on families, especially low-income families. Clothes, shoes, backpacks and supplies can add up to a surprising amount of money, she said.

And that isn’t only the case at Lincoln and Avenue A schools, she said. It’s widespread across Hutchinson, Reno County and the region as a whole. HFD Fire Inspector Michael Cain said the department chose to have the supply drive for the two schools to avoid spreading its efforts too thin.

Firefighters will be at Walmart from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and at Target from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, with the old Engine 1, retired from service in 1996. Cain said the goal is to fill up the back of the fire engine with supplies to deliver to the schools Aug. 18. People who can’t make it to either drive may drop off supplies at any Hutchinson fire station, as well.

Fisher said supplies collected will be discreetly distributed on an as-needed basis. Among the basics needed most are spiral notebooks, pencils, crayons, markers and folders.

Fire Chief Steve Beer said firefighters are excited to help in the community after all the support they received during the March wildfires.
